Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease an 8x8 inch baking pan.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
In a small bowl, whisk together the milk, oil, and applesauce.
Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until well combined. Fold in any optional add-ins if desired.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
Bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let the cornbread cool slightly before cutting into squares and serving.
